Introducing Seryna Jane

Seryna Jane

Sydney Pop singer Seryna Jane has released Haunt Me, a beautiful debut single that will leave your heart lingering. The track comes from her upcoming EP, August Calling. We caught up with her to find out more!

You released ‘Haunt Me’ . Tell us more!

‘Haunt Me’ is a song about those past lovers who seem to keep a hold on you. Even once the relationship is done and dusted, and even once you have moved on, they linger in your mind and keep a piece of your heart. I wrote ‘Haunt Me’ with just voice and piano, and took the demo track to producer Sebastian Morales who added his expertise and flavour by layering beats and sounds.

It was an awesome experience to work alongside Sebastian and I love the vibe we created for the song. Releasing this song is very much a turning point for me. I have been writing music and gigging for over 12 years, but have never put my music out there. I was a perfectionist, I was scared, I was too concerned with what other people would think. To put it simply, I was full of excuses. I’ve had a whole bunch of things happen in my life that have taught me fear is not a strategy. So, finally, I’m ready and excited for this journey and can’t wait to get more of my music out there too!

Listen to Haunt Me below.

How did you get into music?

We were always listening to music at home when I grew up, and we had a whole bunch of instruments around the house that I would play with. But it was just all fun and games. My passion for music began in high school at the age of 15 when I joined a girl band, “Roundabout”. We all picked up instruments we didn’t know how to play and thought, “Why not start a band?” We were terrible! But we loved it.

I soon branched out as a solo artist and have been writing music and gigging ever since. It was at the time I started writing music that I fell madly in love with Hanson (yes I am a huge Hanson fan!). They were such an inspiration to me as a teenager and have definitely had an influence on my songwriting. I’ll always have a soft spot for them. Another major inspiration for me is John Mayer. That man has a way with words! One of his lyrics that tugs at my heartstrings and hits me in the gut every single time is “my dear, we’re slow dancing in a burning room.” Pure brilliance. Moving on to the more jazzy inspirations, I absolutely adore the voice of Melody Gardot. And her story is an incredible one of overcoming adversity and finding a silver lining in a tragic situation.

What’s in store for Seryna Jane in the coming months?

The next couple months are super exciting! The music video for Haunt Me will be dropping, and I’m getting a whole bunch of fun things ready for my next single release and then EP release at the end of March. I’m also playing a bunch of shows around my little home town, Cronulla. Plus, it’s Christmas! I always love this time of year!

What advice would you give other aspiring artists?

My advice would be, just do it! I held myself back for years. I thought I had valid reasons, but if I’m honest with myself, it was just fear. Fear that people wouldn’t like my music, fear that I wouldn’t be good enough, fear of rejection, fear of failure. I’m finally at a place where I’m comfortable and confident in my own skin and in my music, and can put my music out there for me. Writing music and singing is such a part of who I am and I’d absolutely regret it if fear was the thing that stopped me.

Don’t let fear stop you from doing the thing you love.” – Buster Moon

And at the end of the day, what’s the worst that could happen? Someone doesn’t like your music? So what?! Someone criticises your band? Who cares?! Someone isn’t into your voice? Big whoop! None of that matters. You’re following your passion, chasing your dreams and staying true to yourself. That’s what matters.
